FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How many performances will each cast get?
Each cast will get up to two fully staged performances with orchestra. Each artist is guaranteed one performance with orchestra and one with piano.
How many performances will the cover cast get?
The cover cast will get two full performances with piano.
How many participants will there be?
We will accept only up to 40 participanting artists. We believe that the program should be large enough to aid an optimal learning and networking environment but small enough that each artist gets maximum individualized time.
Am I a dramatic voice and should I apply?
The program will accept artists at different stages of development and cast them accordingly. The program is oriented towards larger voices. STRAUSS' ELEKTRA is an ensemble piece which allows for casting of younger dramatic, spinto and full lyric voices, introducing them to the process of learning and performing a Strauss role without the strain of a lengthy score for each individual character.
I have fallen ill, now what?
We have a generous cancellation policy which will be sent upon acceptance to the program. If illness occurs during the program, we will ask a cover cast artist to step in. We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance for cost reimbursement in the case of illness or accident.
How many casts of Strauss Elektra will be there?
Our production will be double cast, which is extremely rare for this type of program. Some roles may have up to four people cast between main and cover casts. Usually, this is done if the role is too demanding to sing several nights in a row and/or is shared by younger artists with less stage experience. Each cast will get ample musical and staging rehearsal time, plus individual musical and language coachings. The cover cast will also get substantial rehearsal time as well as coachings.
Does the program have an age limit?
No, we accept artists solely based on potential and capability. We do not ask for age or date of birth in any of our application materials.
What is the official language of the program?
All instructions is conducted in English. Berlin is a cosmopolitan center and most people speak English.
Will I get to network?
Yes. A big part of the program is aimed at establishing connections with music, stage and casting professionals.
How do I find accommodations?
Berlin is highly affordable and many opera singers make the city their home base. Subletting culture is alive and well in the city, so we recommend searching alternatives to booking a hotel room.
Is Berlin safe?
Although Berlin is a large and cosmopolitan center, it is one of the safest European cities. Public transportation is highly affordable and runs 24-hours, 7 days a week.
How will I get around the city?
Both program venues are within a 10-min walking distance and centrally located in the heart of one of the busiest shopping streets in Berlin. They are also on convenient public transport: U9 UBahn line, S1 SBahn line and many buses. A monthly AB pass is €81 and a weekly pass is €30. Both passes can be used on underground trains (UBahn), above ground trains (SBahn) as well as buses and trams.
